Dip Dye

Forget the subtlety of the ombre toned balayage that many models and celebrities have been wearing over the last season, now they are embracing rainbow bright colour dipping.

Hot or not? You be the judge.

Gaga did the look with her canary yellow ends back in 2010 for the Telephone film clip but others had done the look years before. Blondie back in the 70's , Terri Nunn from Berlin in the 80's and Drew Barrymore did a similar look of blonde and black tips in 2009.

Fast forward Spring 2011/Summer 2012 ...

Spot On

Coveting a clear, luminous complexion?

We’re all prone to the occasional blemish and with the mercury rising and our skin being exposed to heat, humidity & extra sunscreens it’s best to know how to banish the blemish in a few easy steps.

With a change of season most people should be changing to a different foundation formulation to not only suit their skin but also to match any change of tone if they are using tanning products/tanning.

The basic rules of Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize twice daily, exfoliate weekly and always wear a sunscreen absolutely apply during the warmer months.

Use gentle cleansers that don’t strip the skin of natural oils and trick the skin into producing more oil and causing more break outs. Remove cleanser thoroughly as residue can also congest the skin.

If you are using a toner make sure it is alcohol free. I’m not a fan of toners and use a simple alcohol free baby wipe to refresh over the skin after cleansing.

If your skin is prone to breakouts always use an oil free moisturizer and only apply to areas of the face that are a little drier. Oil free foundations work well for most skins, especially a combination /acne skin during the warmer weather.

Unfragranced, alcohol baby wipes are ideal for refreshing the skin surrounding a blemish/blemishes during the day and you can quickly reapply foundation/concealer if necessary.

If acne is a problem, invest in a good treatment cream. Look for products that decongest, such as an overnight clearing gel, anti bacterial wipes and oil absorbing mattifiers.

The best way to conceal a blemish is to use a specific healing/antiseptic concealing product that will provide coverage and also help the blemish to heal faster. Creamy concealers work best and always choose a colour to match skin tone or go one shade darker which will help to set back a raised blemish. Choose a lighter colour for blemishes and you will be highlighting the blemish rather than concealing it. Never use an under eye illuminating, light reflective concealer on a blemish as you will only be drawing attention to the spot.

A green cover stick will help reduce redness in the skin if the blemish is raised and angry looking. The mistake people make when concealer is they apply too much product to the area which can draw more attention to it as the product may start to cake or just look too thick and unnatural. ARTDECO  Perfect Sticks are antiseptic and contain tea tree oil. The soft consistency feels pleasant on the skin.

Practicing good hygiene when dealing with blemishes is the best tip I can share.

Step by step to concealing a blemish

* Apply foundation as normal and then apply concealer wherever it is required. Most foundations will conceal the blemish up to 50% so you won’t overuse any concealing product.

* If the blemish is raised and/or open use a spatula/cotton tips to remove some concealer from the stick and with a small synthetic brush press the product onto the area and gently blend outwards building up to the desired coverage.I f you rub the product in you will end up spreading it more to the surrounding skin and not getting any coverage at all.

* This will reduce the transmission of bacteria from the blemish to the cover stick and them spreading it to another part of the skin. If you do use a cover stick directly to the blemish make sure you remove a small sliver off the tip before putting the lid back on.

* Use antibacterial gel to clean and disinfect your concealer brush before re using.

 * Lightly roll some powder over the blemish to absorb excess oil and set. Don’t over powder or you won’t be able to apply concealer over the top later in the day without out it going cakey unless you are going to remove makeup from the entire area and re apply.

ARTDEO Fixing powder is a great setting product for a raised blemish as it is transparent and waterproof and you can apply more cover stick/camoflauge over the top without makeup caking. For extreme durability it should absorb for 10 minutes.

Resist the urge to squeeze: An inflamed lesion is filled with bacteria, squeezing will cause irritation and possibly spread infection causing more spots and possibly cause scarring to the delicate facial skin.

I understand that ‘sometimes’ if a blemish gets a head that you may wish to remove it. I suggest doing this at night time when you are not at school/work and need to apply make up over the top of it and this allows the skin some time to heal whilst you sleep.  If you have to DO NOT use tweezers, fingernails or worse still -  get someone to do it for you …

* Wash your hands with hot, soapy water first.
* Bathe the area with some hot water on a cotton pad to soften the skin.
* Use two cotton tips and gently press the skin, this will remove the head with the least amount of damage and trauma to the surrounding tissue.
* Use an antibacterial blemish treatment and dab the blemish only, avoid surrounding skin as you will dry this skin out unnecessarily. Look for a product that contains ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and azelaic acid, retinols, AHA, BHA’s.

*  MUA Rae Morris recommends: After extracting a volcanic whitehead, apply hydrogen peroxide (seven to ten per cent is the best strength) immediately. If you apply this twice on the first day the whitehead appears, it will sterilize the area to prevent further infection, reduce inflammation and stop oil oozing out after extraction. Apply gently with a cotton bud for ten seconds then wash off.”  Steiva –A cream is meant to work exceptionally well and has also been recommended in the treatment of persistent blemish treatment.

Natural vs Synthetic?

Quality natural bristle brushes are usually made from animal hair like sable or goat, they are beautifully soft and highly absorbent, perfect for powder formulation products like eye shadows, blusher & mineral powders to hold pigment and allow less fallout as well as making blending easy.

Synthetic brushes are perfect for liquid formulations or wet products like foundations, concealers, mascara and liquid eye liners as they do not absorb the product and transfer directly onto the skin = less product wastage.

Look of the week: Katy Perry - Candy Girl

Launched in Autumn 2010 the ARTDECO Mineral Colour Collection is still right on trend with all the bold brights for Summer 2011/12 and Katy Perry is rocking the look here with lavender lid and golden green under the lash line teamed with a pop of pink lip. See the difference between a muted, nude  lip tone  and an this on trend hue which makes it modern and fresh and more suited to a Spring/Summer look. Looks amazing with a beautiful porcelain skin and rosy, pink cheek. I really love a pink cheek on an alabaster, flawless skin. It's very youthful, fresh looking and doll like. Very pretty.

Did you know: Men are subconsciously attracted to rosy cheeks, as it mimics the glow after sex. We naturally blush a shade of pink so it looks good on just about everyone. If you are fair skinned choose a soft pink hue and for darker skin tones choose brighter, hot pink tones.

ARTDECO Tutorial

(1) Take up a little amount of blusher with the Blusher brush and tap against the back of your hand to obtain the correct amount.

(2) Apply the blusher to your cheekbones and blend gently in the direction of your hair. To avoid making your face look wider than it is, do not cross the vertical line to the middle of your face.
Tip: Light shades add freshness, darker ones contour.

The Mineral collection features hues of lavender, aquamarine, pink amethyst and peridot green straight off the catwalk. The collection includes a high quality multi-mineral complex of zinc and magnesium that is combined with other pure minerals to rejuvenate the skin and provide long lasting colour without blocking the pores.

JUST ARRIVED! Direct from Europe, ARTDECO Mineral Baked Blusher is now available. Perfect summer hues for a fresh faced girlie flush with just the right amount of shimmer. The luminosity  in the blush gives  the skin a glow , making you look more youthful.

Men do make passes at girls that wear glasses

ARTDECO Tutorial: PROFESSIONAL TIPS FOR SPECTACLE-WEARERS

LONG-SIGHTEDNESS

Eyewear can make a fashion statement that when used correctly, can complement your look. But of course, you also need the right eye makeup!
Women who wear glasses to correct long-sightedness will find they make their eyes look bigger.
This means that any mistakes in your eye make up will be easy to spot, so you need to be extra careful when applying it.
(1) Start by applying a darker shade to the eyelid just above the crease.
(2) Use a lighter shade to add highlights under the eyebrow, and blend the two shades well.
(3) Apply a darker Soft Eye Liner waterproof to the inner rim of the eye to define your eyes without making them look bigger, and use the same eye liner along the upper lashes.
(4) Finish with mascara, but only apply to the upper lashes.
Tip: Matt colors prevent your eyes from looking bigger.

SHORT-SIGHTED

If you are short-sighted, the lenses of your glasses will make your eyes look smaller than they actually are. Light eyeshadows that darken towards the outer corner of the eye create a wide eyed look.
(1) Apply a rosy shade to the entire eyelid.
(2) Shade the area above the crease in brown.
(3) Blend thoroughly, and apply a highlighter under the eyebrow arch and at the inner corner of the eye.
(4) Draw a line of white Kajal liner along the inside of the lashes to make your eyes look bigger.
(5) Now apply mascara.
Tip: Use shimmer eyeshadow for optical enlargement.

Big hair that lasts

Short on time and your hair is looking flat & lifeless and the root area looks a little greasy?
Washing it isn't an option? You don't want to wear your hair up either. If only you could give it a lift and  add some body for another day or two more day before washing it again. In need of a quick fix?

The Victorians used to sprinkle arrowroot powder on their hair to help absorb grease and
corn starch and oatmeal have also been used in the past to refresh the hair.

Technology has come far and designed the  perfect solution for you: Dry shampoo!
A water-free way to freshen and restyle your hair and revitalize limp, greasy hair when you don't have time for your usual shampoo/conditioning/blow drying routine. They will also reduce stale odours in the hair which instantly revives the hair and leaves it smelling fresh.

Most products on the market these days still use corn or rice starch but they are less chalky and powdery and some brands have released coloured versions of the product making it more suitable for the darker haired consumer.

Designed to use in between regular shampooing, (not to replace it) and to extend the life of your blow dry this product  works very well for the client who has a weekly blow dry and finds their scalp area getting a little oily and flat around day 3-4.  Dry Shampoo is a quick and effective way to clean your hair from oil & product residue so that you can re tease or build up texture into the hair.

Quick, easy and convenient to use dry shampoos simply require the following steps:

* Shake the can first.

* Lift sections of the hair up and spray a fine mist of product at the root area only but hold the can about 6" away so as not  to saturate the area. Less is more when you are first
experimenting with the product until you get a feel for how much your hair requires.

* Massage the product into the hair around the root area, working it through until the product disappears into the hair and give it a short time to set in the hair.

* Option: Brush excess residue off the hair and remove any white powdery finish if you have any left on the hair.

* Tease, style and finish with some hairspray.

* Instant body and lots of volume at the root area again!

Similar to a dry shampoo, KMS Makeover spray is a matte spray that contains rice starch that absorbs extra oil from the roots, but it is is also a texturizing, styling product giving the hair more volume and root lift. This is a product I can recommend as it works exceptionally well and I think is a better alternative to a specific 'dry shampoo' product as you don't have the problem of a powdery, white mess to deal with plus it gives the hair extra strength making it easy to work with to build up big hair.

It's an  excellent style refresher and builds bulk to refresh limp or day-old styles. Great for quick style touch-ups and in-between shampoos.
HOW TO USE
Shake well. Spray 4-6" (10-15 cm) from roots and work through to absorb oil. Layer through mid-lengths and ends to add bulk for a finished style.

It has a matte finish  and contains peppermint and grape extract leaving hair refreshed and clean.

This product is very popular in the salon where I work with many of the Ladies who have a weekly big hair blow dry spraying this into their root area mid week to get some extra oomph and absorbing some oil away from the scalp area.

Some brands are definitely more prone to leaving a chalky, powdery residue in the hair if you spray too much product on to the root area and this seems to be the biggest problem for most people. Essentially all Dry Shampoos are doing the same thing  so you will need to experiment with brand to work out which one best suits you, your style and budget.

Everyone seems to be familiar with Klorane Dry Shampoo which can be bought at any pharmacy or department store. I have never use this myself and reports on the product are mixed. Some people love it and some find it a little too powdery on the hair. Formulated from natural plant extracts it contains oat milk which has a natural soothing effect on the skin, so it’s gentler on the scalp than many other dry shampoos and is ideal for anyone who finds that these types of product can itch or irritate a sensitive skin. It has effective cleaning properties due to its combination of highly absorbent agents of different densities, which means the product is easy to brush out. The absorbent natural microspheres are molecules of glucose with a strong affinity for sebum. Combined with softening, protective oat extract, the formula has an effective action against excess sebum.

Dry Shampoos for BRUNETTES:

The traditionally  powdery white consistency of most dry shampoos can make brown/black hair look  dull and slightly grey. Fortunately , a new generation of dark dry shampoos have hit the market.

Look out for Lee Stafford's Poker Straight Shampoo in Dark . Lee Stafford, renowned London hairdresser has  launched  a dry shampoo  that contains corn starch, which helps to absorb oil in the hair.  Refreshes, revitalises and leaves hair clean and healthy looking.
Poker Straight Dry Shampoo is a world-wide hit, with a bottle selling every minute in the UK's exclusive distributor, Boots. This product is available at Priceline in Australia.

Or try Cedel Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair has a cornstarch formulation that is easy to brush out of the hair. The formula ensures that no white, powdery marks will be left on the hair.

Thanks for the question Brendon Tylor, hope the information was helpful.

* I just read a review about EVO Water Killer Dry Shampoo which is also a 2 in . It's a  cleanser and styles also, absorbing oil and boosts volume . It's free of sulphates,  paraben and propylene glycol so might be worth a try if you're looking for a more eco- friendly product.

Vintage Hair / Retro Waves

As requested by one of my readers here is the best detailed tutorial information I could find using the GHD Styling Iron to create old school waves. It will take a little practice but with the right products, time spent perfecting the techniques and brushing out the pin curls and dressing the hair you can create  the 50's vintage waves and the sophisticated femme fatale looks of Katy Perry who is currently the face of GHD.

" Sleeping beauty woke up in the fifties when locks were as glamorous as the frocks"

Tutorial taken from

VENETIAN VENUS

Conjure up a little romance with some undone waves. Pretty.

1 FOAM-UP

Starting with towel-dried hair, generously apply GHD STYLE TOTAL VOLUME FOAM throughout roots, lengths and ends and comb through to with the GHD DETANGLING COMB.

2 DRY IN

Using your hairdryer, rough-dry the foam in to your hair, smoothing with the GHD PADDLE BRUSH as you go. Creating this foundation will give longevity to your waves.

3 FINGER CURL

Spritz hair all over with GHD STYLE CURL HOLD SPRAY. Working from the back, take a small section and twist it anti-clockwise while wrapping around your fingers clockwise.

4 PIN & SET

Release the twisted hair into a pin curl then place in the GHD GOLD CLASSIC STYLER for 6 seconds. Pin the curl to the scalp to cool. Continue until all your hair is curled. When working with the curls either side of the parting don’t twist the curls right up to the root.

5 WAVE

Allow the curls to completely cool, this will set them and give your style longevity. Once cool, begin letting the curls down from the back lower sections first, giving each a gentle backcomb at the root and gently twisting it in the opposite direction to release a beautiful wave.

6 STYLE & SET

Once all your pin curls are released, don’t be afraid to muss them up. Brush the roots and use your hairdryer to break up the set waves – the hair should look soft, touchable and not too done. Once you’re happy with your waves, set with a spritz of GHD STYLE FINAL FIX HAIRSPRAY.

50's Glamour look takes inspiration from the classic Hollywood style with captivating soft curls and sultry cat's eye flicks to recreate a look straight from the 50s silver screen. Recreate this modern Glamour look and create beautiful soft waves with this simple step-by-step video.

Another technique using the GHD Styling iron  is using a  rolling S shape motion. Not an official video below but it gives you a good indication on the technique to use. This technique is obviously a little quicker if you don't have time to pin curl set your hair and works well on shorter hair.

A deep side part makes a perfect starting point  and if you have a fringe it can be pushed up and back. If you have shoulder length hair and want to create the vintage styles that Dita Von Teese wears this is a good starting point.

Get your self some wave clips to pin the wave into place along the crest once you have gently brushe it into place. You can lightly spray again with hairspray and leave the hair to set  a little longer so that when you finally brush it out it will be a little more defined and last longer.
Make sure the ends of the hair are smoothly tucked under for that classic 50's finish.

If you don't have a GHD Styling Iron you could try another straightening iron but it
must have a rounded barrel or you cannot create the right shape. Otherwise you
could curl the hair with a curling iron and then roll each section into a pin curl and
secure the base with a pin curl clip. Let it set, cool as above technique and then brush
out. If all else fails pull out the trusty old heated rollers, (make sure you use a thermal protector to protect the hair) and do a directional set off your part line. Pin curl once
you remove the rollers and follow the same steps to brush out and mould into place.
